Each UA flight's passenger count comes from its seatmap. We sum across flights the airline is showing as "In Flight." Flights in the last 15 minutes before landing get weighted down toward zero, so the number falls gradually as they touch down. The figure is an estimate, ±300 people. Booked seats include people who didn't show up. Some Pacific flights cruise outside the ADS-B coverage we use to find planes. And the airline's status flag flips to "In Flight" a minute or two after wheels-up, so flights that just took off can be undercounted.
